How to start a blog

Starting a blog

Starting a blog can seem like a daunting process especially when you look at other blogs. But what you have to realise is that those blogs started from exactly where you are at right now. Everything and everyone started without a clue about how to build a blog but guess what? You learnt how how to drive, make coffee, cook, use a computer so you can learn as you go. Just remember that – you can learn. You will learn. Never allow the lack of knowledge stop you. So that’s out of the way lets get into your steps.

This post may contain affiliate links. Read my Disclosure Policy to learn more.

STEP 1 Blog name and domain name

The first thing is to decide your blog name. Don’t be too tempted to overthink this process, find something you like and go with it.

Step 2 Hosting

Now you need to get hosting services – this is like the land to build your house on (the house is your blog and the land is the hosting). The good news about hosting is that it is very cheap working out at £5/month if you buy 2 -3 years in one go. Building a blog and making money from it isn’t something that happens overnight so think long term and don’t sell yourself short by buying one year hosting. Show up and put your skin in the game.

Now if that hasn’t scared you off then you go to Bluehost and buy the hosting service along with your domain name. Here is the link (if you use this link – it means that I will get a referral commission at no extra cost to you) I use Bluehost for all my websites and hosting and their customer support is outstanding.

Get BlueHost hosting at a special rate here.

You want to click on the big green Get Started tab

Step 3 Choice Plus

The next page shows you the options for the Basic, Plus or Choice plus. The basic is slightly cheaper because it only allows you one website on your land so I wouldnt recommend this for multi-passion entrepreneurs. There is a special offer on at the moment where the Choice Plus is the same price as the plus. Instead of £11.50/month its £4.50/month on a 3 year term. Its like you are paying your rent in one go so that you don’t have to worry or think about it and all your energy can be focused on creating great content, driving traffic and monetising.

Free first domain name registration

On Choice plus you also get your first domain for free! (I had to pay for my domain name and continue to do so and I pay for my privacy too because I didn’t know all this and you are getting the benefit of my experience – that makes me so happy)

Free Domain Privacy Protection

Choice plus also includes your domain name privacy for free which means you don’t have to pay extra to keep your name and address private on the internet registry. This is very important and great that its included. If you do go for the basic do remember to tick the bit where you can keep your name and address protected. It is a fee that you have to pay annually and its means that if anyone wants to know who owns your domain name they will see Bluehost details instead.

Step 4 Enter your domain name (blog name)

Once you select Choice Plus, the next step is a fun bit – you get to get your domain name(this is the name you thought of right at the beginning). Just pop it in there and it will show you if the domain name is available. With your domain name you want to use .com extension if possible. We live in a global economy world so unless your blog is going to be talking of geographically locale things then you want to use .com.

Step 5 Payment

On the next page you see where it will ask for your details and what you will be getting with the Choice plus package.

Deselect Site Lock security on there. You don’t need any extras – trust me. Your site doesn’t need this. There is already security in built in the site.

Then pop in your details and get ready to build your empire!

In a few minutes you will be able to get into your Bluehost hosting and follow the instructions to set up your site. It will ask you if yours is business or personal – select personal for now and

REMEMBER TO WRITE DOWN THE PASSWORD YOU USE FOR YOU WORDPRESS.ORG when you install it for your new blog.

Congratulations you now have your very own corner of the interwebs! This is the first step that makes all the difference in the world. You have done !

Next step is to play around and choose a theme in wordpress. Don’t worry you site isn’t live yet so you can spend some time surveying the land so to speak and building your house.

Let’s start with setting up your email marketing – I have written an in-depth step by step post which can help you on the way to setting up your email marketing using Constant Contact. Do not fear – its easy as ABC.

Then lets talk about how to grow your email list. But first what is an email list in the first place?

Why you need an email list?

Email lists give you a direct link to your audience. They are not subject to the vagaries of the algorithms that change regularly. An email list is like your contact list on your phone – its people who have voluntarily given you their email address because they want to hear from you. And that gold in the world of direct marketing. You own your email list. Your email list is the most important channel for you to cultivate.

Now that you understand why you need to set up an email list lest talk about how to grow your email list with Constant Contact. They provide marketing solutions for bloggers at competitive rates. Why grow your email list?

It is all about the numbers – the more people you have on your email list the higher your chances of converting. Converting can mean anything from making sales, gaining new clients of getting more eyeballs on your content. Intuitively you want to grow your audience and share your awesome content.

How to grow your email list.

But how can I grow my email list? There are so many ways to grow your list! We will look at my favourite 5 ways to grow a list and how you can go about implementing these for your site! I love using Constant Contact because they have great support and a user-friendly interface that makes even a newbie be able to create fantastic looking opt-ins.

You know you already have the amazing content. Now combine that with crystal clear call to action goals to grow that list. Here’s how –

Pop-up Sign-up Form

A pop-up sign-up form is a form that prompts website visitors to join your mailing list. You
can set the form to display when users land on your website after they’ve spent a specific
amount of time on your site, or when they go to leave. You can also customize how the form
looks, as well as choose which lists the form is connected to. I personally prefer to offer it after they have been on the site for a while.

Why do pop-ups work?

Popups are a can’t-miss call-to-action. Literally. It doesn’t get more can’t-miss than a window appearing over the content you’re trying to read. And while we are at it – yes there are some who may say they find them annoying but here’s the catch. While 2/3 of people I asked say they don’t like pop ups, the remaining 1/3 said they found them useful. So you are better off presenting the pop up and capturing that 1/3 of people who love what they are seeing.

With Constant Contact there is no additional fee to use pop up forms.

Just follow these steps to create your first pop up sign.

To create a Pop-up Sign-up Form:

  1. Click Sign-up Forms.
  2. Click Create Sign-up Form.
  3. Choose “Pop-up”.

Big Bold Sign Up Forms on your home page

The most email savvy sites have a big bold email sign up form on their homepages. You can do this by using an inline sign-up form. They treat their blog homepages like email capture central.

Inline Sign up form

An inline sign-up form is a form that can be placed in the perfect spot on your site. Using
HTML code, you decide where the form displays on your site. If you need to make changes
to your form, there’s no HTML editing necessary. Yes – read that again – No HTML editing necessary! You can make changes to your Inline Form right in your Constant Contact account and it will update automatically on your site.

  • Private blog content – you can offer exclusivity through extra content only viewable via email.
  • Early access to new features – offer VIP status by showing first edits and top tip- ask your subscribers to comment on it before it goes live.

Make it easy to sign up with your subscription link

Your site isnt the only place where you can get sign ups. You can get the link and share it in a huge number of different places like email signatures, social media messages, Youtube channel, and guest blog bios. One of the options you can do this is by creating a lead generation landing page.

What is a lead generation landing page?

A Lead Generation Landing Page is like a stand-alone website for generating new leads through social media and email. With a Lead Generation Landing Page, you can customize the look of the page, add an image, and choose which data you want to collect from visitors. You have the option of givnig your landing page a custom URL!

Here’s how you create a lead generation landing page:

  1. Click Sign-up Forms.
  2. Click Create Sign-up Form.
  3. Choose “Lead Generation Landing Page”

Once you have designed and customised you landing page then you add the link to your bios and and forums that you participate in. Its really easy to do. The best part is that once you set it up then all you have to do is continue creating amazing content as your email list grows!

Constant Contact offers many customisable sign-up options like Facebook lead ad, Join My List App and Text to join.

Hello world!

Hello! And welcome to Thrive&Earn! I am Hila WIlling and I am super passionate about sharing my experiences of building an income online while still maintaining the freedom to do the school run.

My children are the most important part of my life and I decided that I was going to quit paid work in the academic world to do the hardest unpaid job of all – raising my kids.

As the kids got a bit older and more independent I started blogging as a creative outlet and before I knew it, my blog had grown and I discovered a hitherto unknown community online.

After years of blogging and Youtubing for the joy of it, I realised that I could be earning a livelihood form doing the thing that brought me joy. That is thriving! You thrive when you can earn from doing what you love.

I have done a lot of things that have earned me money online and I am here to help you do that too.

Thriving also means that you have to get the mindset of thriving. For many years I accumulated a lot of knowledge about making money online and did it but until I fixed my mindset that things shifted for me. That is why I include mindset as one of core pillars of this site.

So grab a cuppa and have a browse through the posts and resources available here.

Getting started with Pinterest

Pinterest

Now you have your blog ready to go with posts and your lovely pictures. The next step is to start promoting your blog through Pinterest.

Why Pinterest is the best for new blogs

That’s a great question – a lot of people don’t seem to truly understand how powerful Pinterest is. Pinterest is a visual search engine – think Google for images.

Its not like Instagram either which is a visual based app. It means that Pinterest is not as concerned with your follower count as they are with how much value your pins provide to readers. This is good because unlike IG where you have to grow an audience to lead to your content on Pinterest you can lead to your content straightaway.

The quality of pins are measured in several ways:

  • Average repin rate of your pins relative to follower count
  • The average click-through rate for your pins when they appear in the SmartFeed, or in search results
  • Average time spent on your site AFTER someone clicks on a pin
  • The bounce rate of whatever landing page/blog post your pin leads to

Like all things on the web, Pinterest has an algorithm which identifies quality and relevance for users.

How do you leverage Pinterest to work for you?

We do this by ensuring that pins get SEO optimized for whatever keyword(s) you want your article/pin to rank for.

SEO (search engine optimised) is a fancy way of saying that your pins have the words that people may be looking for e.g. If my pins says “Wearing my beautiful dress I made while on holiday in Zimbabwe” for on a pin that links to my sewing pattern review of the dress then my pin will not come up for “sewing dresses” or “handmade dresses” because my description doesn’t even contain the keyword “sewing” or “sewing patterns”.

Use the keywords that are relevant to the content. We will be looking at SEO in greater detail in a couple of weeks but for now your pins need to include the title of your post.

Before we get into the nitty gritty of Pinterest you need to set up a Business Account on Pinterest. This will allow you to schedule pins and claim your website so you can create rich pins.

Create boards

You want to create relevant boards that tie into your site content. E.g. I have a sewing blog so I have a Handmade Clothes Boards, Handmade Skirts, Independent Sewing Patterns, etc. Boards are like your tags and categories but in a visual format.

You will also create a Best of board only contains your stuff from your blog, This will be the board with the name of your site as its board name. You will pin all your site pins here.

Join group boards

If you can find group boards in your niche then try to join. Group boards give you an opportunity to get your content in front of many people.

Creating your pin

Use Canva.com to create your pins. Canva already has the custom pin dimensions and templates that you can use. A few things to keep in mind when designing your pin:

No.1 It has to be easy to read. No fancy swirly text.

No. 2. Use eyecatching colours to make your pins pop and stand out.

No.3. DONE IS BETTER THAN PERFECT. You will never create the perfect pin – so forget about making it perfect. You just need a visual representation of your blog  post.

(I will cover Canva in more details next time I see you)

Creative commons images

You should only use copyright free pictures. NEVER just use a google image result. Luckily there are plenty of free stock photo sights where artists generously give away the copyright and let anyone use the pictures.

Fonts

You can get free fonts to use on several websites. Be sure to check the license agreement on the font before you download it though to make sure that’s completely free. Some fonts may say you can use for free in PDF newsletters but when it comes to a website they charge for a certain number of views. (All the fonts in Canva are royalty free fonts so you don’t have to worry about that). You can always buy the font if you really like it and can even use it on your blog.

Free font websites:

How many pins per blog post?

To start off with design 3 pins for your post. As your blog grows and you start to see which posts are more popular you can then go on to create more pins for your popular content – popular posts usually tend to be the most value adding for the user so you want to keep getting traffic to them.

That’s it for now. We will go deeper into Pinterest at a later stage. The important thing now is to start creating your pins for your posts and get into the habit of making a minimum of 1 pin per post. The pinnable image is placed as the last thing on your post. I have added examples pins I made for a book review post that I did. I could have just pinned a picture of the book but this was visually more eyecatching nad it got a lot of clickthroughs to my blog and a few Amazon purchases through my affiliate link for the book.

I thought I’d include some pin examples:

Affiliate Networks that you can join as a new blogger and start earning.

One of the most flexible ways of earning money as a blogger is through affiliate marketing. There are many affiliate networks out there and some have higher entry requirements than others.

I believe that when you start a blog there is no reason why you can’t start the foundation of earning through your efforts. As you grow your blog, define your niche and find your feet you can learn about affiliate marketing as you go.

What is affiliate marketing?

In a nutshell, affiliate marketing is when you get paid for promoting or referring sales for a product/service. So for example, have you ever read about how much someone loves a face mask and you click through to look for that face mask and then buy it? If the link was an affiliate link then the person who referred you will get a small amount. The key point is that you, as the buyer, are not paying anything extra. The company is basically paying for the promotion they got through the writer’s blog.

If the writer hadn’t used an affiliate link you ‘d still pay the same price and probably go back to buy again and perhaps even recommend it others. What affiliate marketing does, when done right, is it allows the smaller publishers to get their fair share of the pie.

*Affiliate links. If you sign up I may receive a small commission.

Everything that is done on the internet makes money for someone somewhere and affiliate marketing is a way for the start up blogger to make some money for their efforts.

Affiliate networks take the hustle out of having to deal with individual advertisers and they act as the middlemen connecting the writer (content creator/blogger/youtuber) with the advertisers. They will collect the money from the advertisers and make sure you get paid.

How do they know that you referred someone?

When you sign up to an affiliate network you will get a unique tracking reference number that will show you vital statistics like how many clicks and sales etc.

Learn to Say No

Don’t be fooled into thinking that to be open minded and to embrace life you have to say yes to everything and everyone all of the time.

Learning how to say no will help you to stay focused and prevent you from taking wrong turns.

Learning to say no will allow you to say yes to more things that are in line with your values.

A lot of us are not taught how to properly say no. Nor are we taught that “no” is a complete sentence.

We are taught to justify, explain, rationalise. But you dont need to . Its okay to say “no”.

Here are some “no” statements to try the next time you want to keep space for things that are important to you –

“No”

“No thank you”

“Thank you. I will take time on it.”

“Thats not my cup of tea”

“Nah thanks”

And sometimes just a blank stare before changing the subject.

Actually, you can accept praise

Yes, you can accept praise. A big part of growing your confidence and courage is in accepting praise.

When somebody praises you for something, dont discredit them using the standard “Oh anybody can do it”.

Accept the praise with grace and openness. A simple “Thanks” works really well.

You are unique and are full of talents. You may refuse to see it but when other people acknowledge it – dont force your perception of yourself on them.

Take the compliment. Smile. And go boldy forth living your best life.

Get Happy!

Did you know that a positive attitude contributes to success in life?

A study by Stanford Research Institute reported that 87.5% of people’s success can be traced their positive attitudes. The amazing thing about the study was the finding that only 12.5% of their success was attributed to aptitude, knowledge or skills.

That means it ain’t about what you got but about how you use it and frame it. That’s the essence of mindset right there.

Try to keep your focus on the positive – having fun in any situation can help you to build courage and confidence.
